How a session runs

Forty-five minutes. One axe in the bullseye.

  1. 1

    Briefing

Five minutes on how to hold it, how to carry it, and the two things the coach will say all session: "throw" and "clear".

  2. 2

    Stick your first one

The coach works on your grip, your step and your release until the axe is landing blade-first. For most people that's inside ten minutes.

  3. 3

    Play

Pick a game on the lane screen: classic rings, a moving bullseye, a tile race, a duel. The target scores every hit itself; the coach watches your throw and brings out the bigger axe once you've earned it.

  4. 4

    Final

Last ten minutes are a knockout on the screen. One winner per lane, your scores saved to your profile if you want them, photo with the axe in the bullseye on the way out.

The kit

Start small. Earn the big one.

Everyone starts on a 1.25 lb hatchet, the same weight used in competition: light enough to throw one-handed, heavy enough to bite. Once you're sticking consistently the coach brings out the big axe, a 2.5 lb two-hander that goes in with a very satisfying thud.

Targets are end-grain boards, soaked so the axe bites and swapped as they chew up, with the ChampThrow Interactive system projecting the target onto the wood: sensors register where each axe lands and the lane screen scores it on the spot. Lanes are steel mesh to the ceiling with a timber backstop and rubber matting, so a bounce goes nowhere.

  • Hatchets

1.25 lb, one-handed. Where everyone starts and where most of the scoring happens.

  • Big axe

2.5 lb, two-handed, coach's call. Fewer throws, bigger thud.

  • Digital target

Projected onto the board and changes with the game: classic rings, a moving bullseye, a grid of tiles, a duel. Every hit scored by the sensors.

  • Lane screen & app

Pick the game and the difficulty on the touchscreen. Make a profile in the app and your scores and achievements follow you back next time.

Lane rules

Sharp things. Simple rules.

Axe throwing has a very good safety record for one reason: everyone follows the same six rules, every time.

Coach in the lane

Every lane has a coach for the whole session. Nobody throws, or collects, until they say so.

One on the line

One thrower at a time, standing on the line. Everyone else waits behind the lane's marked line.

Carry it head-down

Axes travel by the handle, head down, never swung or tossed. One axe out of the rack per thrower.

Your target only

Throw only at your own board. Never step forward to collect while anyone in the lane is still holding an axe.

Caged lanes, closed-toe shoes

Full-height steel mesh between lanes, timber backstop, rubber floor. Trainers or boots, no sandals.

Sober lanes

Same rule as everywhere at Chillpit: if we think you've been drinking you don't throw, and there's no refund.

FAQ

Axe questions.

I've never thrown an axe. Will I actually stick one?

Almost certainly. A coach stays in your lane, the first ten minutes are technique, and most people stick their first axe inside that time. Then it's about hitting the rings.

How old do I need to be?

18+, or 14 to 17 with a parent or guardian in the lane who signs for them. Younger kids are better on the games floor or the pool tables.

Is it safe?

Yes. Each lane is fully caged, one thrower on the line at a time, a coach controls when you throw and when you collect, and the axes are hatchets with a proper cutting edge but a controlled weight. The projector and sensors sit outside the throwing zone, so there's nothing in the lane but you, the axe and the wood. Closed-toe shoes required.

How big are the axes?

You start with a 1.25 lb hatchet, which is what competitions use. Once you're sticking consistently the coach can bring out a bigger axe for two-handed throws.

What are digital targets?

The target is projected onto the end-grain board and sensors register where your axe lands, so every throw is scored automatically on the lane screen. You still throw a real axe at real wood; the difference is the board can change: classic rings one game, a moving bullseye the next, a grid of tiles to clear, a duel between two throwers. We're fitting the ChampThrow Interactive system used by the UK's bigger axe venues.

Can we play games?

That's the point. Pick from the library on the lane screen: classic 21 and Killshot, moving targets, tile-clearing races, head-to-head duels, with difficulty levels from first-timer to competitive. Scores land on the screen as you throw, so the coach can concentrate on your technique rather than the arithmetic.

Does my score get saved?

If you want it to. Set up a profile in the app, pick an avatar, and your lifetime scores and achievements follow you between visits. Handy for settling who really is the best in the group.

Can we do more than the axes?

Yes. Throw & Play pairs the lane with an hour on the games floor for £35 a head, Throw & Pot pairs it with a pool table for £30, and The Lot does axes, games and pool for £36.
